Dr. J. Ryan Quinn is a hip and knee replacement surgeon whose training runs deeper than most. A native of Salt Lake City, he studied at the University of Utah before heading east for medical school at the Medical College of Virginia, then back west for a five-year orthopedic residency at UC Irvine. From there he went to Scripps Clinic in La Jolla for a fellowship in lower extremity reconstruction, training that covers the full range of hip and knee replacement, from straightforward cases to the most complex. In 2020, he brought that training home, joining Ventura Orthopedics to see patients in Oxnard, Camarillo, and Simi Valley.[1][2]
Dr. Quinn is a fourth-generation physician, and by the time he chose the profession, it had already chosen a shape for him. What he added himself is the ability to carry that care across a language barrier. Fluent in Spanish and Q’eqchi’, a Mayan language, he has spent part of his career on medical mission trips to Guatemala, expanding his reach to underserved populations.[1][2] He lives in Camarillo with his wife and three children, and when he is not in the operating room, he is usually on a golf course or, when the season allows, on skis.
Trained for precision
Dr. Quinn performs total and partial knee replacement and total hip replacement through both anterior and posterior approaches, including robotic-assisted surgery.[2] His fellowship covered the most demanding cases in the field, and that depth carries into every hip and knee he treats: close attention to alignment, fit, and balance, and a plan built around the patient in front of him. It is exacting work, and it is part of why his patients tend to describe him less like a technician and more like someone they trust.
That trust shows up in the numbers. Across more than 275 patient reviews, Dr. Quinn holds a 4.9-star average[3], and the reviews themselves repeat the same handful of themes: he takes his time, he answers every question, and he shows up at the bedside after surgery.
He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons, and holds hospital affiliations at St. John’s Regional Medical Center, St. John’s Pleasant Valley Hospital, Community Memorial Hospital, Adventist Health Simi Valley, and Aspen Surgery Center.[1]
Why he chose Kinomatic
His instinct for precision is what brought him to Kinomatic. The partnership adds a step before he ever enters the operating room: a 3D surgical plan built from the patient’s own CT scan, which he can study and rehearse in virtual reality ahead of the day itself.
Kinomatic does not operate, and it is not a robot. Dr. Quinn stays in complete control of every decision, and the platform is implant-agnostic, so it works alongside his preferences and whatever robotic-assisted technique the case calls for.
What it means if you live in Ventura County
For someone in Oxnard, Camarillo, Simi Valley, or elsewhere in Ventura County weighing a hip or knee replacement, the practical version is this: with Dr. Quinn, your surgery is now planned on a 3D model built from your own anatomy, and he will rehearse the approach before you are in the operating room.
The surgeon is still what matters most. Patients already describe Dr. Quinn as unhurried, thorough, and present long after the anesthesia wears off. A doctor who has spent his career translating, across languages, across a family legacy of medicine, and now across the gap between a CT scan and the operating table, so that a patient walks in already understanding the plan for their own body.
